California salary paycheck calculator

How much do I take home in California?

In California, take-home pay equals gross wages minus federal income tax, California Personal Income Tax (PIT), State Disability Insurance (SDI) (no wage cap since SB 951), Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500), and Medicare (1.45% + 0.9% above $200,000). On a $75,000 single-filer salary, the estimated 2026 California net is roughly $57,965 per year (~$2,229 biweekly / $4,830 monthly), before 401(k), HSA, or CalPERS/CalSTRS pre-tax deductions.

Is a “CA paycheck calculator” the same as a California paycheck calculator?

Yes — CA is the two-letter USPS postal code for California, so a CA paycheck calculator, CA tax paycheck calculator, CA hourly paycheck calculator, and state of CA paycheck calculator all refer to this same tool. It applies the 2026 IRS brackets, California PIT (1%–12.3%, DE-4), CASDI (1.2%, no wage cap under SB 951), and FICA to your gross wages. Unlike Michigan or Ohio, no California city imposes a local income tax on wages, so the calculator produces the same net pay for Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento, and Orange County. Calculated using 2026 IRS federal brackets (Rev. Proc. 2025-32), the $184,500 Social Security wage base, a $16,100 standard deduction for Single, and the California 2026 state tax rules. Pre-tax 401(k) reduces federal taxable wages but is still subject to FICA; health and HSA contributions reduce both federal and FICA wages. Estimate only — not tax advice.

Hourly, overtime & bonus pay in California

California wages are reduced by federal income tax, California PIT, SDI (no wage cap), and FICA (7.65% up to the Social Security wage base, plus 0.9% additional Medicare above $200,000). Employers report withholding to the EDD and FTB based on your Form W-4 and DE-4.

Hourly: multiply your hourly rate by weekly hours, then by 52, for annualized California gross. Try the calculator's hourly mode above or the dedicated hourly-to-salary calculator.

Overtime: California requires 1.5× pay over 8 hours/day or 40 hours/week and 2× (double time) over 12 hours/day — stricter than federal FLSA. Model it with the California overtime pay calculator.

Bonuses & RSUs: supplemental wages in California are withheld at a 6.6% state flat rate (10.23% for stock options and bonus payments), plus 22% federal supplemental (37% above $1M), 6.2% Social Security, 1.45% Medicare, and SDI. Reconcile the actual PIT liability on your California return, or estimate long-term stock sales with the capital gains tax calculator.

California withholding & SDI glossary

Quick definitions for the payroll terms and California-specific entities that appear on your paystub.

Tax withholding
Money your employer removes from each paycheck and sends to the IRS and California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) on your behalf as a prepayment toward your annual income tax bill.
SDI (State Disability Insurance)
A mandatory California payroll deduction administered by the Employment Development Department (EDD) that funds short-term disability and Paid Family Leave benefits for workers.
CASDI
The paystub abbreviation for California SDI. Since SB 951 took effect, CASDI is withheld on all wages with no annual wage cap at the 2026 rate.
Form W-4
The IRS Employee's Withholding Certificate. It tells your employer how much federal income tax to withhold based on filing status, dependents, and other adjustments.
Form DE-4
California's Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate, filed with the EDD. It controls state Personal Income Tax (PIT) withholding separately from the federal W-4.
PIT (Personal Income Tax)
California's progressive state income tax, ranging from 1% to 12.3%, plus a 1% Mental Health Services Tax on taxable income over $1 million.
FICA
Federal Insurance Contributions Act taxes: 6.2% Social Security (up to the 2026 wage base) and 1.45% Medicare, matched by your employer.
Supplemental wage rate
The flat withholding rate applied to bonuses and other supplemental pay: 22% federal, 6.6% California (10.23% for stock options and bonus-like equity).
Pre-tax deduction
Contributions (401(k), HSA, health premiums) taken from gross pay before income tax is calculated, lowering your taxable wages and increasing take-home pay.
Gross vs net pay
Gross pay is your wages before any deductions. Net pay is what lands in your bank account after federal tax, California PIT, SDI, FICA, and pre-tax benefits.

California take-home pay: worked examples

Three step-by-step scenarios showing how gross pay becomes net pay after federal tax, California PIT, SDI, and FICA. All figures use 2026 rates for a single filer with the standard deduction and no dependents.

Example 1 — Weekly salary, $1,500/week

$78,000 gross annually · single filer · no 401(k) or pre-tax benefits.

  • Gross weekly: $1,500.00
  • Federal income tax: −$160.19
  • California PIT: −$75.13
  • Social Security (6.2%): −$93.00
  • Medicare (1.45%): −$21.75
  • Net take-home: $1,149.93 / week (~$59,796/year)

A $1,500 California paycheck loses about 23.3% to combined federal, state, and FICA withholding at this income level.

Example 2 — Biweekly salary with 401(k) and health premium

$3,000 gross biweekly ($78,000/yr) · 6% pre-tax 401(k) · $75 pre-tax health premium · single filer.

  • Gross biweekly: $3,000.00
  • Pre-tax 401(k) + health: −$255.00
  • Federal income tax: −$264.28
  • California PIT: −$126.55
  • Social Security: −$181.35
  • Medicare: −$42.41
  • Net take-home: $2,130.41 / biweekly (~$55,391/year)

Pre-tax 401(k) contributions reduce both federal and California PIT withholding, but Social Security and Medicare (FICA) are still withheld on the 401(k) portion.

Example 3 — Hourly with overtime, $28/hr + 5 OT hours

40 regular hours at $28/hr + 5 overtime hours at $42/hr (1.5×) = $1,330/week gross → about $69,160/year. Single filer, no pre-tax benefits.

  • Regular pay: 40 × $28 = $1,120.00
  • Overtime pay: 5 × $42 = $210.00
  • Gross weekly: $1,330.00
  • Federal income tax (weekly): −$122.79
  • California PIT (weekly): −$59.32
  • SDI + FICA (weekly): −$101.74
  • Net take-home: $1,046.14 / week (~$54,399/year)

California requires 1.5× pay after 8 hours in a day or 40 in a week, and 2× after 12 hours in a day. Overtime is taxed as regular wages — the higher hourly rate can push a paycheck into a higher federal withholding tier for that period, but your annual effective rate is what matters at tax time.

California SDI / CASDI calculation example

State Disability Insurance (shown on paystubs as CASDI) is withheld at a flat 1.2% of gross wages in 2026 with no annual wage cap since SB 951 (2024). The formula is simple:

CASDI per paycheck = Gross wages this period × 1.2%

Weekly — $1,500 gross

$1,500 × 0.012

$18.00 / week

≈ $936.00 per year

Biweekly — $3,000 gross

$3,000 × 0.012

$36.00 / biweekly

≈ $936.00 per year

Semimonthly — $3,125 gross

$3,125 × 0.012

$37.50 / semimonthly

≈ $900.00 per year on $75,000

Monthly — $10,000 gross

$10,000 × 0.012

$120.00 / month

≈ $1,440.00 per year on $120,000

Because SB 951 removed the annual SDI wage cap, high earners now see CASDI on every paycheck all year — a $300,000 salary contributes about $3,600 to SDI in 2026, versus roughly $1,600 under the pre-2024 cap. SDI is separate from federal tax, California PIT, and FICA, and appears on your paystub as CASDI or CA SDI.

How we calculate your California paycheck

Enter gross pay — your salary or hourly wage before any taxes or deductions come out. The calculator does the pre-tax math for you; do not subtract your 401(k), HSA, or health premiums first. The 2026 engine then runs the same six-step pipeline for every California paycheck:

  1. 1. Annualize gross wages. Weekly × 52, biweekly × 26, semimonthly × 24, or monthly × 12 — so all withholding tables see the same annual figure.
  2. 2. Subtract pre-tax deductions. Traditional 401(k)/403(b), HSA, FSA, and Section 125 health/dental/vision premiums are removed from federal and California state taxable income. Roth 401(k) and after-tax deductions are not subtracted here.
  3. 3. Apply 2026 federal income tax. IRS brackets 10%–37%, standard deduction, and your W-4 filing status and dependents.
  4. 4. Withhold FICA. Social Security 6.2% up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500, plus Medicare 1.45% on all wages and an additional 0.9% Medicare on wages above $200,000. FICA applies to 401(k) contributions but not to Section 125 or HSA.
  5. 5. Apply California state and local tax. Progressive 1%–12.3% with additional 1% above $1M. These rates apply to your post-pre-tax-deduction wages using your state withholding certificate. No broad city or county income tax applies to California wages in 2026 — the state line above is the only jurisdictional tax withheld.
  6. 6. Subtract post-tax items. Roth contributions, garnishments, and voluntary post-tax benefits reduce net pay but do not lower taxable income. The remainder is your take-home, which the calculator divides back by pay frequency for per-check net.

Results are estimates for 2026 W-2 wages and are not a substitute for Form W-4, your California withholding certificate, or advice from a licensed tax professional.
